The second, was realizing that I was going to get paid for writing a poem.
In the past eleven years I have devoted much of my waking life to poetry and for the first time, I was compensated in more than free beer and gas money for pouring my heart and soul out into a microphone in a room full of strangers. I have had audience members tell me that my poems have brought them to tears, changed their lives and made them think... But I'd never had anyone offer to pay my month's rent in exchange for my hard work. I had done many commissioned pieces for various political events, but had always been expected to do it for free- for the cause. The support of the CBC for spoken word has changed how I view myself as an artist.
I was nervous the first year. I was almost too nervous to enjoy the talented musical guests and wonderful ambience. The second Poetry Face-off fell on my birthday. Performing with musical accompaniment was a great learning experience; pianist Silvio Pupo was perfect. He listened with his head and heart to all of the poems and understood the emotion of each unique piece. I was completely stunned to hear that I had won. One of the most difficult elements of competitive art is competing against peers whom you admire and respect. I had been overwhelmed and deeply humbled by the work of the other poets that evening and to have come out on top was almost unbelievable to me. Even before I was announced as the winner, I would have counted the second Poetry Face-off as one of the best nights of my life. It doesn't get any better than listening to great poetry surrounded by supportive family and friends- and I am lucky to have a wonderful and supportive family and the inspiration of a very talented city of poets to light me up.
